What is a Promise Neighborhood?

Our bold promise is every child in the IndyEast Promise Neighborhood will be ready for college and prepared for a career.

The Near Eastside and Martindale Brightwood communities make up the IndyEast Promise Neighborhood. Led by John Boner Neighborhood Center and Edna Martin Christian Center, the initiative launched in 2023.

Promise Neighborhoods are selected by the federal government through a competitive grant application process. The Department of Education awarded John Boner Neighborhood Centers and Edna Martin Christian Center a 5-year, $30 million grant to create the IndyEast Promise Neighborhood.

The IndyEast Promise Neighborhood vision is a vibrant neighborhood with thriving children and resilient families. We will achieve this vision by implementing solutions in four key areas: Learn Early, Learn in School, Learn for College & Career, and Learn in Community.

Our Goals:

  • Learn Early: All children enter kindergarten ready to succeed.
  • Learn in School: All scholars are proficient in core academic subjects and successfully transition from middle school to high school.
  • Learn for College & Career: All scholars graduate from high school on time and go on to obtain a degree, certification, or credential.
  • Learn in Community: All scholars feel safe, are healthy, and live in a stable community. The community is invested in the success of all scholars in the Promise Neighborhood.

Scholars and their families in the IndyEast Promise Neighborhood are connected to opportunities and resources from early childhood through college and their careers.
