Student Voices, Community Impact: IndyEast Youth Advisory Board

The Youth Advisory Board (YAB) is comprised of students who are working toward a stronger and more connected community.

YAB Members reviewed the goals of the Promise Neighborhood and selected one to focus on for their projects. Group and individual projects are the main focus of the YAB for personal and professional development and for supporting the IEPN Promise. YAB members had to do group projects with the following requirements:
1. Based on a GPRA (Government Performance and Results Act indicator)
2. Incorporates an aspect of community
3. Uses a storytelling medium

Here’s a look at their projects:

  • Every Day Counts – An incentive event to curb chronic absenteeism among Freshmen at Arsenal Technical High School. Final group presentation by Landon, Hannah, and Markus for members, their families, and organizational partners.
  • Saturday Story Fest – Ruby and Millie focused on addressing children’s literacy rates under GPRA 9 through a community literacy event targeted to families with children 3-10 years old called “Saturday Story Fest”. Attendees were able to participate in multiple activities such as creating their own books, a book exchange, a library scavenger hunt, and a read aloud. The event was hosted at Spades Park Library.
  • Math is more than a Number – Naomi focused on academic success for students in math under GPRA 2 through a poster and QR codes linking to videos discussing the importance of math in daily life.
  • Berry Gets Help – Ruby focused on helping students feel safe in their schools and communities under GPRA 7 by creating a children’s book on trauma, called Berry Gets Help.
  • College Opens Doors – Hannah focused on creating a college-going culture under GPRA 5 by painting a mural design with national statistics and data results from the IEPN Community Survey completed in 2024. YAB members voted on two possible design sketches.
  • Tips for Student Safety – Millie focused on addressing community safety for students walking to and from school under GPRA 7 by creating an informational video with tips for students.
