We wanted to share a recent win for our Promise Elementary Schools. Last month, Indianapolis Public Schools (IPS) released the district’s IREAD test results, which measure third-grade reading proficiency in Indiana. The results highlighted several of our Promise elementary schools, with strong overall proficiency rates and significant growth from the previous year.
Building on IPS’s districtwide gains, students at Thomas Gregg Neighborhood School and James Russell Lowell School 51 improved their proficiency rates by 15.3 and 23.1 percentage points, respectively. James Russell Lowell was one of only two IPS schools to see an increase of more than 20 percentage points.
Two other Promise Schools, Brookside School 54 and Washington Irving Neighborhood School, also saw increases in their proficiency rates. Both now have more than 80% of their third graders demonstrating proficiency, with Brookside at 83.1% and Washington Irving at 82.4%.
Since the IndyEast Promise Neighborhood was created in 2023, IREAD proficiency rates across IEPN schools have increased by 25.6 percentage points.
These results reflect the hard work of students, educators, and families, strengthened by the coordinated partnership between IPS, individual schools, IndyEast Promise Neighborhood partners, and the broader community. Together, classroom instruction and supports such as out-of-school-time programming, high-dosage tutoring, family supports, transportation services, and other resources are helping create the conditions for children and families to succeed.
We’re proud of the students, educators, and families in our Promise Schools and excited to see this progress continue.
